The Networked Non-Profit by Beth Kanter and Allison Fine

Book Review – by Pamela Bosworth

In the book The Networked Nonprofit, Beth Kanter and Allison Fine explore the impact of social media and social networking in non-profit organizations.

Networked Non-ProfitKanter and Fine, who have both spent their entire careers working for and with nonprofit organizations, state:

Social media will not fade away.  It will continue to grow and become even more ingrained in how we live and work. As the use of social media has grown, leaders’ skepticism has shifted from resistance to concern that they are being left behind. The question for organizational leaders is no longer whether to embrace social media, but how to do it effectively.

This book explores the myths that have prevented some nonprofit leaders from engaging in social media.  Sharing examples from other nonprofit organizations, the authors provide insight into what it takes to become networked and what is achieved as a result of becoming a networked non-profit.

A few of my favorite statements from this book:

“Networked Nonprofits are simple and transparent organizations.  They are easy for outsiders to get in and insiders to get out.”

“Networked Nonprofits don’t work harder or longer than other organizations, they work differently.”

“We want to caution readers that knowing how to use social media well is not just about knowing which button to push.  Technological wizardry shouldn’t overshadow the truly revolutionary power of social media, which is its ability to connect people to one another and help build strong, resilient, trusting relationships.”
