Heaven to Earth

Let the news of a miracle be sounded forth and you can anticipate a crowd coming to see what’s happened.  Our last post (see November, 2012) found Jesus in the synagogue in Capernaum casting out evil spirits.  Mark records that “news about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.”  I guess so!!  Mark moves from the synagogue to the simple home of Simon’s mother-in-law where Mark records that she was healed of a fever and immediately got up to serve her guests.  That same evening, the sick and demon-possessed from all over the region were brought to Jesus to be healed and delivered.  Mark names one miracle after another in the first chapter of his Gospel.

The Kingdom of God is a Kingdom of wholeness.  It is the representation of the place Jesus has gone to prepare for us.  It is the reverse of the kingdoms of this world where sin has destroyed relationships and shalom (all good).   The proclamation of the Kingdom of God was underscored by demonstration.  Healings and deliverance abounded.  “Central to the understanding and proclamation of the Christian gospel today, as in Jesus’ day, is a re-visioning of what God’s own life is like and how the physical cosmos fits into it (The Divine Conspiracy, p 62, Willard).”  It is the demonstration of heaven come to earth in Jesus; the reversal of the curse.  “Jesus’ good news about the kingdom can be an effective guide for our lives only if we share his view of the world in which we live. To his eyes this is a God-bathed and God-permeated world” (The Divine Conspiracy, p.61, Willard).  The disciples were watching alongside the recipients of the healings and deliverances, learning of the power of God in Jesus, His Son, for the possibility of reclaiming His creation to make it new!  These miracles are not done to “wow” the people.  They were communications of a new way introducing and inviting people into the Kingdom of God.

Discipleship is following Jesus as He works in our world today.  We watch what He does.  We listen to what He says.  We attend to the things He attends to.  We observe the various ways in which He communicates the how, where and when of His making all things new.  We marvel as we watch and become a part of the Kingdom of Heaven coming to earth.  The healing may come in big ways such as from disease and the deliverance may be epic as with the demoniac in the synagogue.  It also may be the imperceptible healings of the wounded places of our hearts and the deliverances from our own ungodliness.  These speak of the demonstration of His Kingdom come to earth and a new order put in place by Messiah!  Perhaps our healings and deliverances will cause people to come and see what’s happening with us, giving them hope for themselves!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

The kingdom of this world
Is become the kingdom of our Lord,
And of His Christ, and of His Christ;
And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,

King of kings, and Lord of lords,
King of kings, and Lord of lords,
And Lord of lords,
And He shall reign,
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings, forever and ever,
And Lord of lords,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
